Boston Firefighters Battle Rooftop Fires

The fire was contained to the rooftops, Boston Deputy Fire Chief Steven Shaffer said.

Boston firefighters battled flames on the rooftops of buildings along East Broadway on Saturday afternoon.

"When we got there, the roof deck and part of the roof structure itself was on fire at 587 (E. Broadway) and it was spreading to the adjacent building, 583," said Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer.

Witness videos showed firefighters appeared to be focused on the rooftops of two buildings. The orange glow of the fire was visible through thick, dark smoke, WCVB reported.

"The roof was burned pretty well, but it didn't get into the main structure of the building," Shaffer said.
